In honor of my forty-third birthday, my boyfriend took me to the city of museums, Washington, D.C., to quench my thirst for art. On the eve of my birthday, I was dressing for dinner when I found what felt like a golf ball sized lump in my left breast; my instinct knew there was something wrong. He tried to simmer my thoughts but I worried all weekend, anxious to make the doctor appointment I had made for Monday. This photo is taken October 25th, my birthday; you can tell that my eyes aren't smiling.
