The night before my prophylactic mastectomy, I wanted to be surrounded by my friends' love and light, so I made it happen: I threw a Boob-Bye™ party! Israel Cronk, general manager of Bangz Salon & Wellness Spa offered me his chic location for the evening, and everything else fell into place: I went door to door to local establishments who graciously agreed to donate food, flowers, balloons or accoutrements in "support" of the event.
My mastectomy got postponed to 12/10, but the party had to go on! Initially a women-only event, I extended the invite to men since they are effected directly or indirectly from breast cancer as well. Friends, acquaintances and people from the community I didn't know attended who read about the party online or in the paper: this made me happy since my intention was to bring the community together to educate and support those afflicted with breast cancer.
The best was saved for last: the fabulous pink bra-cake from Creative Confections was left untouched; no one dared to touch the work of art until I was told to "motorboat" it. I learned a new verb as I plunged into the deep cleavage, moving my head from side to side, coming up for air with a mouthful of fondant and vanilla cake: delicious!
A heartfelt thank you to those who attended and made it happen: Bistro 18, Salute Bistro, Fricassée French Bistro, Tinga Taqueria, MishMish, Le Salbuen Cafe, Toast, Uncle Momo, Sandwich Theory, Uptown 596, Raymond's, Mundo Vegan, Red Eye Cafe, Tiny Elephant, Le Petit Parisien, De Novo European Pub, Plum on Park, Sweet Home Montclair, Nicolo's Italian Bakery & Deli, Jackie's Gillette, Gina's Bakery, The Little Daisy Bake Shop, Creative Confections, Miss Nicky's Loving & Healing Cookies. Java Love Coffee Roasting Company ACME Montclair Noble Studios Photography and Deejay, John Masi Photography and Jacob, compassionate chef of Le Salbuen Cafe who ran after me out of the restaurant and offered to help serve at the event. Special guests included Adam Anik of The Montclair Times, Diane Lilli from The Jersey Tomato Press and Debbie Galant and Noah Levinson of The Chemo Files. I felt hugged from my hometown!
