METAVIVOR 'S STAGE IV STAMPEDE

Screen Shot 2017-09-18 at 5.07.57 PM.png

METAvivor’s 2nd Annual Stage IV Stampede: make your voice heard on Capitol Hill! The event will include a half mile march from the Hyatt Regency to the U.S. Capitol, a Die-In (hosted by MET Up) to represent the 113 individuals that die each day from MBC, and an educational briefing on patient protections in healthcare. The event will culminate in a day of team-based meetings with the offices of your Senators and House Representatives where we will educate them about stage IV MBC and ask them to support the community by facilitating additional funding for research, keeping vital patient protections in healthcare and improving access to treatments.

On Thursday October 12, METAvivor will host registration, a reception and a brief training session for individuals interested in learning more about the issues facing the community and how to effectively engage congressional staff. You do not need to be an expert in civics or government to help create positive change, you just need to stand up and speak out!

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF CANCER RESEARCH ANNUAL MEETING 2017: PANELIST

The Potential Impact on Cancer Patients of a Repeal or Revision of the Affordable Care Act: one of the sessions at The American Association of Cancer Research's Annual Meeting 2017, where I'll be a panelist.

The Administration and Republican lawmakers have said that dismantling the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a top priority in 2017. The ACA, which was signed into law in 2010 and implemented over the subsequent six years, has provided major benefits for cancer patients. These include: prohibiting denial of insurance coverage for those who have cancers (the “pre-existing conditions” stipulation); coverage of preventive services for colorectal, breast, cervical and lung cancer screenings and skin cancer counseling; removal of annual and lifetime dollar coverage caps; and the mandate for insurance to cover participation in clinical trials.

This session will bring together patients, physician scientists, and healthcare researchers to provide first-hand evidence why any replacement of the ACA should address and ameliorate impacts on cancer patients, survivors, and those at risk, including quality and cost of care. This session will discuss some of the specific provisions in the ACA that are benefiting cancer patients, such as: ensuring that individuals are covered for pre-existing conditions; access is provided to preventive services; annual and lifetime coverage caps are prohibited; and access to clinical trials is encouraged.
